Jason Smith
I'm the editor for the new Northern Michigan magazine, The 45th. I'm also an assistant publications director at Village Press, right here in Traverse City, as well as editor for the national magazine, Just Labs. In addition, I'm managing editor for two other magazines, The Retriever Journal and The Pointing Dog Journal. Village Press is the publisher for all of these. I've written a few books, all on dogs or the outdoors, so The 45th is my first venture into the world of food and wine -- though I've been an admirer for quite some time! I have advanced degrees in wildlife sciences from Lake Superior State University and South Dakota State University, and I have to say that my favorite things to cook are wild game and fish. We are a hunting family (including my wife), and we are constantly having family "game dinners" in which we all bring a favorite recipe for salmon, pheasant, venison, grouse, etc. Those truly are wonderful parties, especially with our fabulous local wines.
