Up North Foodies Comes to the Table
Up North Foodies was recently featured on WJR's Come to the Table radio show. Listen to the podcast here. Had a chance to plug a lot of great Northern Michigan businesses, so it was worth the angst. I'd mentioned the hickory nut cookies, and a listener emailed a story that made me chuckle. Thought I'd pass it along:
My Uncle had a farm in Chelsea for years. Some of my favorite memories were of him shaking the nuts from the trees. He would spend all winter with a piece of wood on his lap and a hammer cracking the nuts, using a horse shoe nail to pick the meats out of them. It would take a whole winter for him to crack and pick 2 quarts jars of them. My aunt one time baked a cake and used the nuts in the frosting, just as she was going out the door she dropped it on the floor, My uncle said scrap it off an take it to the ice cream social because she was't going to use any more of the nuts.

I listened to it Monday, BRAVO to you for hooking up with WJR to promote the foodie scene in Northern Michigan. Thanks for the plugs!
BTW, although Empire would be a beautiful location, my restaurant is in Glen Arbor.

Oy, I even KNOW that! Sorry about the Empire/Glen Arbor switcheroo...That along with my "wildcakes" reference demonstrates why I went into PRINT journalism originally...and not broadcast! One never knows what will be coming out of my mouth. I'm just glad I got the color right and didn't call "blu" "green"
D'oh!
Folks, for the record, blu is in Glen Arbor!

Don't beat yourself up, you were a great spokesperson for our food scene. Very engaging. I think "wildcakes" sounds inspiring, all though I haven't yet figured out what it inspires...

Greg, you're a kind soul. I had this vision of telling them about a special kind of pancake we make up here while camping in the backwoods called "wildcakes." I think I could have run with it and had some folks believing it!

I used to make a wild rice pancake garnish for my duck confit, I just might have to put it back on the menu when all the snowbirds return.
