Local Foods Tasting Wrap Up
When I began planning the Local Foods Tasting held last Friday at Horizon Books, I first thought of local chefs that have a reputation for sourcing local foods. The tasting was part of an evening that also included readings and book signings with Gary Nabhan and Stephanie Mills, and we wanted to minimize the driving between events. So with the signing already slated for Horizon Books, holding the tasting there made sense as well. The folks at Horizon suggested speaking with Cuppa Joe owner Sandi Daley, and to be honest, my first thought was, "Don't they do coffee and scones and stuff like that? But hey, there's no harm in talking with them." Boy, am I glad I did!
From the first meeting with Sandi and Vicki Kaley (right and left, respectively, in the photo above), who not only works at Cuppa Joe, but also farms with her husband Roger (Sun Ra Farms), I felt like I was in goods hands. Their enthusiasm for tracking down local sources, their talent at developing a tasty, varied menu that fit our budget, and their professionalism to deliver what they promised made this project so much fun. Jeremiah Priest at the Warehouse Lounge pitched in with the cooking, and everything was absolutely delicious. My faves were the heirloom pumpkin soup, and a fennel leek tartlet, but everything was great. Vicki blends flavors with just the right touch so that the vegetables really shine through, rather than hiding behind an over-coagulation of cheese! She's promised to post some recipes, so keep an eye out for them.
If I'm ever to plan another event, I wouldn't think twice about working with Cuppa Joe. I found out they cater and host special events at their Building 50 location, Horizon Books, and the Warehouse Lounge. Who knew? But now you do too, so keep them in mind for your next event.
We're also grateful to Nikki Rothwell and Dan Young for donating cider from their new business, Tandem Ciders; Spencer Stegenga from Bowers Harbor Vineyards, for providing the wine; and to all the farmers who work hard at getting the food to our tables! Thank you!

What a fun community event this was---readings by two leading voices of the local food movement, tasty and perfectly prepared fresh foods (including wild rice from the UP) and great music to wrap things up. All celebrated in the spacious yet cozy confines of Horizon Books lower level---all in all, a perfect family evening spent with a lovely group of people. Thanks to Paula McIntyre for working so hard to organize the whole thing and to all those who catered to and entertained us!

I second Charlie's sentiments. It was a great (and delicious) event. Hopefully, just one of many to come.
