Crain’s picks up Michigan Grapevine
Congratulations to Cari Noga, whose Michigan GrapeVine blog will now appear monthly in Crain's Detroit Business. Based in Traverse City, Michigan, Noga has covered the state's grape and wine industry since 1999.
In her first article for Crain's, Noga writes,
In the last dozen years, the number of wineries calling Michigan home has almost quadrupled, from 15 to nearly 60.
Wine production has increased fivefold. Michigan consumers are filling their glasses more and more often with vintages from the Great Lakes State -- case sales of Michigan wines rose 19 percent in Southeast Michigan last year, according to a survey by one distributor.
Yet there's relatively little coverage about wineries as businesses, and even less that comes straight from wine country.
Michigan Grapevine comes from Traverse City, the emerging hub of the industry, where some two dozen wineries make their home.
