Cowboy Coffee Returns!
Our coffee drinking ground to a halt recently, after a full moon in Capricorn drove me to clean up and clear out unused trinkets, gifts, clothing and counterspace-gobbling kitchen appliances... including our coffee maker. What was I thinking?!
Sunday morning is prime time for a little pick-me-up in our household, so my resourceful roomie set about filling a giant tea strainer with coarsely-ground java and steeping it in boiling water. The hand-ladled, lukewarm and weak brew was anything but satisfying...and our pastries from Gallaghers Farm Market and Leelanau Produce were wanting for lack of a good dunk.
This morning, after an insomniac night, it was my turn. I filled two small tea strainers with coarse grinds and placed them inside a clean, one-size-fits-all hosiery knee high. I drowned the knee high and its contents in boiling water then immediately simmered for 20 minutes. Delicious, robust brew -- nothing to chew on -- and my fresh-baked hickory nut cookies took their first and final dip of the season. Giddiup!

At least knee highs are good for something!

We still haven't replaced the coffeemaker. This low-tech brew tastes strangely better! We had a little misadventure yesterday which leads me to this caveat. If you want to avoid unsightly ponding on the floor, be sure to dunk the entire knee high in the brew. Don't hang the open end daintly from the saucepan handle. When my bare feet tracked water across the tile floor, I thought our skylight was leaking during a morning shower. Then my sleuthing roomie followed the water trail through grout grooves back to the stove!
