Calling All Up North Foodies:  The Locavore Hors d’Oeuvres Challenge

Never before has a night at the movies been this corny and this delicious!

On Monday, March 31, Great Lakes Bioneers is sponsoring a showing of the feature documentary, King Corn at the State Theatre. Before the film, join our special guests for a Locavore Hors d'Oeuvres Challenge from 5:30-7pm at Serenity Tea Bar and Cafe, across the street from the theater. And as a very special treat, the locally produced documentary, Talkin' Bout Making Culture: Community Supported Agriculture in Michigan will be shown at the pre-film reception (a short of the CSA video will also be shown in the Theatre). Filmed during the 2006 CSAbyCYCLE tour, this documentary short is a celebration of the CSA movement in Michigan, and features the heroes of the movement - CSA farmers!

So what's a Locavore Hors d'Oeuvres Challenge, you ask? As you likely know, "locavore" was awarded 2007's Word of The Year by the New Oxford American Dictionary. It refers to people committed to eating foods grown within their local foodshed.

"The word 'locavore' shows how food-lovers can enjoy what they eat while still appreciating the impact they have on the environment," said Ben Zimmer, editor for American dictionaries at Oxford University Press. "It's significant in that it brings together eating and ecology in a new way."

The Challenge: show off your finest locavore deliciousness...in Northern Michigan at the end of March. No contests, just good fun and good food. Everyone is invited to enjoy the goodies that show up - no dish is required and the reception is free - but my hope is that Up North Foodies are up for the challenge! What's left in the freezer? How about that delectable canned good you've been saving for a special occasion? Or maybe you have a secret source of fresh local food that you're ready to share with the rest of the foodshed. Bring it on! Let's show Traverse City that you really can eat locally and eat well all year round. Talk about making culture!

Oh yeah, I almost forgot...with the help of Oryana Natural Foods Market, Great Lakes Bioneers are bringing co-producer and 'co-star' of King Corn, Ian Cheney to town for our special evening. He'll answer your questions, taste your treats, and tell you more than you care to know about America's favorite food: corn.

I'll see you there - I can't wait to taste your answer to the Challenge!
