Emily Betz Tyra tracks down 41 of the best eats in Northern Michigan in the March issue of Traverse magazine. From the lobster cakes at Grand Traverse Resort's Aerie restaurant, to homemade baklawa at the counter of the 14th Street Mobil Station in Traverse City; a cookie dough frosted brownie (yum!) at Blue Heron Cafe in Cadillac, Apple Yum Salad at Thai Orchid Cuisine in Petoskey, to the kraut dogs at Bunting's in Cedar. I can vouch for those kraut dogs, having enjoyed them several times last year. Sounds like the other 40 delectables are a good excuse for some road trips this summer!

A summer of a honey

I've always liked honey, but for some reason, this winter it is really hitting the spot. On Christmas, my mom, sister and I sampled some my mom had received from a friend. The honey came from Julius Kolarik's farm in Northport, and its taste immediately brought to mind a field of wildflowers for all of us. I'd never experienced such an obvious connection to "place" from a food. And in the middle of winter, a connection to that field of flowers felt good! Then last month I tried Sleeping Bear Farms' Lemon Honey Creme. They're not kidding when they label it "sunshine in a jar!"

CSA Farms Signing up for 2008

CSA farmers Judy Reinhardt and Jim Schwantes loading the table on harvest day.

The snow outside is piling up, but local farmers are thinking spring. CSA farms are starting to sign up members for the 2008 growing season. CSA, or Community Supported Agriculture, is a partnership between a farmer and members who purchase a share in the harvest before the season begins. Doing so helps spread both the risk and the rewards of farming. And it's always fun to see what's available in the weekly pick-up. Check out the local CSA farms to find one right for you. Don't delay...many of them have waiting lists!
