Traverse magazine lists Best Eats

Emily Betz Tyra tracks down 41 of the best eats in Northern Michigan in the March issue of Traverse magazine. From the lobster cakes at Grand Traverse Resort's Aerie restaurant, to homemade baklawa at the counter of the 14th Street Mobil Station in Traverse City; a cookie dough frosted brownie (yum!) at Blue Heron Cafe in Cadillac, Apple Yum Salad at Thai Orchid Cuisine in Petoskey, to the kraut dogs at Bunting's in Cedar. I can vouch for those kraut dogs, having enjoyed them several times last year. Sounds like the other 40 delectables are a good excuse for some road trips this summer!

Connecting Farms to Schools

In Prosperous Farms, Well-Fed Kids, Diane Conners of the Michigan Land Use Institute shares several local success stories to connect northern Michigan farms and schools. These stories and more will be featured at a conference on March 12 at the Hagerty Center in Traverse City. Seventeen organizations, including public school districts and private schools, will share their expertise in bringing fresh local food into cafeterias, classroom curriculum and school fundraising efforts.

A summer of a honey

I've always liked honey, but for some reason, this winter it is really hitting the spot. On Christmas, my mom, sister and I sampled some my mom had received from a friend. The honey came from Julius Kolarik's farm in Northport, and its taste immediately brought to mind a field of wildflowers for all of us. I'd never experienced such an obvious connection to "place" from a food. And in the middle of winter, a connection to that field of flowers felt good! Then last month I tried Sleeping Bear Farms' Lemon Honey Creme. They're not kidding when they label it "sunshine in a jar!"

Traverse City Ranks 3rd Best Fishing Town in America

Traverse City hooked a third-place finish in Field and Stream's recent list of Best Fishing Towns of America. The magazine looked at towns with populations under 100,000 and cited TC's fishing diversity as a plus.
